Anticipate Treating Seizures Fast With IV Levetiracetam

You may see more orders for IV levetiracetam to treat patients with "status epilepticus" as quickly as possible.

The longer these seizures last, the harder they are to stop...and brain damage risk goes up. Benzodiazepines (lorazepam, etc) are first-line...but many patients need an antiseizure med.

Levetiracetam premixes or vials can be given over just a few minutes. Clinicians may start favoring it over other options that require prep or a longer infusion...such as fosphenytoin or valproic acid.
