Stay Alert for More Metoclopramide IV Piggybacks

Emergency departments (EDs) will weigh giving more 10 mg metoclopramide doses as an IV piggyback (IVPB) instead of IV push.

Low-dose metoclopramide (5 to 10 mg) is often given as a 2 min IV push via syringe to help patients with headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Conversely, higher doses ABOVE 10 mg are usually given as a 15 min IVPB bolus infusion...to decrease extrapyramidal side effects (EPS), such as tremors, muscle spasms, etc.
