Continuing fluid shortages are highlighting questions about balanced IV fluids and why they’re used.

IV fluids are important meds...especially in the ICU. They’re given as boluses or continuous infusions to improve and maintain hydration...boost blood pressure...and dilute IV meds.

“Isotonic crystalloid” fluids...normal saline (NS), lactated Ringer’s (LR), etc...are commonly used. But crystalloids have different ingredients, compatibility considerations, and costs.
