Technicians are asking for tips about dispensing alteplase (Activase) and dornase alfa (Pulmozyme) to give through chest tubes.

Alteplase is usually given IV to break down blood clots...and dornase alfa nebs thin out and clear lung mucus in cystic fibrosis.

But these meds can also be given off-label by the intrapleural (IP) route...into the space between the lung and chest wall via chest tubes...to help remove pockets of pus, blood, or other fluid.
