Double-Check Acetylcysteine Doses for Acetaminophen Overdose

You may notice changes to IV acetylcysteine orders for treating some acetaminophen overdoses.

It's because the usual approach...giving IV acetylcysteine 150 mg/kg for 1 hour, then 50 mg/kg for 4 hours, then 100 mg/kg for 16 hours...could fall short in certain patients.

Higher acetylcysteine doses may be more effective in those with "massive" acetaminophen overdose...such as ingestion of 30 grams or more.
