Bronchitol Will Be a New Inhaler for Cystic Fibrosis

Bronchitol (inhaled mannitol) will pop up on home med lists of some adults with cystic fibrosis (CF).

Think of it as similar to nebulized hypertonic saline. These "osmotic" agents draw water into the lungs to help thin out mucus so that patients can cough it up more easily.

A big difference is that Bronchitol is a dry-powder inhaler similar to Spiriva HandiHaler. It's touted to be more convenient than using hypertonic saline with a nebulizer.
