Avoid Common Errors With Ketamine

You may get more orders for ketamine...in low doses to treat acute pain in the emergency department.

Ketamine is used for short, painful procedures because its anesthetic effects kick in and wear off quickly. But these 1 to 2 mg/kg IV doses can have side effects, such as blood pressure changes or psychotic reactions.

Now 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg IV doses are being tried for acute pain. These lower doses have fewer and milder side effects...and reduce the need for opioids in some cases.
