Know the Differences Between Smoflipid and Traditional IV Lipids
Smoflipid (SMAH-flip-id) will compete with traditional IV lipids (Intralipid, Nutrilipid) for use in parenteral nutrition.
Think of Smoflipid as similar to traditional lipids. It's a 20% fat emulsion that can be mixed with dextrose and amino acids or dispensed separately.
The difference is that Smoflipid has FOUR fats...soybean oil (30%), medium chain triglycerides (30%), olive oil (25%), and fish oil (15%). Intralipid and Nutrilipid only have ONE fat...soybean oil (100%).
