Think of Bezlotoxumab as an Add-On Therapy for C. diff Diarrhea
You'll hear about bezlotoxumab (Zinplava, zin-PLAH-vah), the first drug approved to prevent RECURRENCE of Clostridium difficile diarrhea.
Think of bezlotoxumab as an add-on treatment...NOT as an antibiotic. It only prevents diarrhea symptoms...and must be given along with antibiotics (metronidazole, etc) that kill C. diff bacteria.
Expect bezlotoxumab to be saved for patients that clinicians consider "high risk." But keep in mind, it's too soon to say if bezlotoxumab decreases diarrhea recurrence after more than one C. diff episode...and it costs almost $4,000 per dose.
