The most common cause of occluded IV catheters is blood clots...and alteplase can help break them up.

Expect to see alteplase 0.5 mg to 2 mg ordered to clear IV catheters...depending on your hospital's protocol. Keep in mind that these are lower doses than you'll see to treat strokes and other problems caused by clots.
