Create Pathways to Promote Non-Opioids for Pain in Your ED

You'll be asked about ALternatives to Opioids or "ALTO" therapies for acute pain in adult emergency department patients.

Work with your ED team to create ALTO pathways for common sources of acute pain, such as fractures or renal colic.

Try scheduled oral acetaminophen and an NSAID first. For example, in patients with acute extremity pain, acetaminophen plus ibuprofen reduces pain as well as an oral opioid/acetaminophen combo.
